Tine Steen Larsen

M.Sc. in Indoor Environmental Engineering at AAU in 2001 and obtained her PhD in 2006.

Assistant professor at Aalborg University

Did you know that people in the modern world stay indoors for about 90 % of the time? It is a long time, and therefore it is important that the indoor environment is as healthy and comfortable as possible.

I have always been interested in the indoor environment and the well-being of human beings. Through the study at AAU within Indoor Environmental Engineering, I have learnt how to ensure a good indoor environment. This includes all aspects, from the activities of one room to the construction of the entire building. Furthermore, aspects of energy are also considered which is necessary to make energy-efficient buildings.

To me, the working methods at AAU were important for my choice of university. In my opinion, the professional benefit increases when you discuss the subjects with fellow students in connection with the group-organised work and subsequent opportunity to test the knowledge during the project work. Furthermore, through the different project groups I have worked with during my studies, I have obtained a lot of contacts that can benefit my further career.

After graduation I chose to continue on a 3-year PhD programme at the Hybrid Ventilation Centre at AAU. During this time, I stayed in Japan for half a year at one of the international research contacts of my supervisor, where I conducted tests in a large wind tunnel in which different wind velocities were possible. Also, it was a great experience to work and live in a country of a culture that is so different from my own, and I still get energy and inspiration for new ideas from my stay in Japan.

Now, I am an assistant professor at AAU working with natural ventilation, where I work with finding a method to predict the effect of single-sided natural ventilation.
